Gerty is a big fan of vintage Bally shoes! Infact, I love Bally Shoes so much that I made sure these traditional shoes were going to adorn my bridal feet on my wedding day. They might  not have been vintage Bally, but  with  a three inch heel and covered in lush gold silk, they made my "big day" extra special. These timeless classics now live in a super soft brushed cotton sleeping bag in a vintage trunk and will probably sleep there for many more years to come. Well until my baby girl (9months) is old enough to wear them! Personal memories aside; Bally is the brand to collect and wear:

Started in 1854, a shoe factory was set up in a swiss village by Fritz Bally. In just 6 years 1860 Fritz employeed over 500 staff and was selling the Bally Brand interntaionally. The Bally brand remained in full family control until the end of the last century. The strong concept and identity for luxuary refined details, hand crafted appeal and minimal decoration is why this brand has lasted the test of time.

We just about managed to pull a 'Christmas Cracker'  or two before heading back to work  at our new studio space in lovely St. Ives Cornwall. It hasn't all been about packing, parcelling and posting we've had time for a fun few hours... photographing our new model Lydia-Ann. We love cool '90s grunge and here are some of the images  from the shoot:

Merry Christmas from Berty & Gerty Vintage

We have been busy shipping our ASOS boutique, Website boutique and Ebay boutique parcels. We will be working up till Christmas Eve and back to work the day after Boxing Day. All our parcels are now being shipped with Royal Mail Tracked. That means every parcel will have a unique tracking code so customers can re-direct and track their lovely vintage purchases. The Vintage Scarf

The trusty silk scarf isn't just for that certain type of lady marching down the King's Road. We believe any 'trendy' worhy person should own a least a dozen scarves.

Since the 1930's silk scarves were mass produced as a little bit of luxury for the woman on the street. It was the like of Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn that made this little bit of luxury an essential statement piece for any woman's wardrobe; even more popular than red lipstick.

Whether you are a collector of imitation silk 1930's rayon scarves or collector of the optical geometic prints of the 60's  we should have something in our collection for you. A DECADE FAMOUS FOR OPULENCE AND GLAMOUR, WHICH IS OFTEN REFLECTED IN THE HEAVY EMBELLISHED STYLING AND MUTLI-COLOURED PANELLING ON THE BAGS FROM THAT PERIOD. WE SAY HAPPY HUNTING. Ankle Boot - Get well heeled...

Ankle boots this season are massive. We are surprised each year how many new styles grace the cat walks in London. Current favourites are what we call the classic Mary Poppins, which are a Victorian style lace-up boot with a small kitten heel with a hook and eye fastening. We have noticed a demand in tour shop for the classic mod chelsea boot, be it flat or with a cuban heel. Gerty's favourite is a chocolate brown buttery leather ankle boot which is lined in cream leather with a slight grip sole, Bally or Russell & Bromley vintage ankle boots are simply the best. STATEMENT KNITWEAR

There's a lot of gloom and doom about at the moment, what with the economy and this Autumn's fashion trends of goth and military. 

Why not buck this trend with a piece of statement knitwear. Perhaps an oversized cardi or jumper in a bright angora or mohair. Not only will you feel warm and luxurious but you'll add a dash of colour to an otherwise dreary landscape. Take it a whole step further with embellishment or multi fabric design circa the 1980's or look out for batwings and real fur trim for that ultimate Molly Ringwald in 'Pretty in Pink' Look. 

Here at Berty & Gerty Vintage we have noticed a trend that we like to call 'Granny Feet'. It seems that a classic brown brogue or two tone loafer are just the ticket whilst pounding the streets in our ever busy and hectic lives.

Invoking images of Girl Guide Leaders, Headmistresses or the Women's Institute these classic shoes not only provide practical comfort but also create a stylish finish to any look. At Berty & Gerty Vintage we're constantly sourcing fine examples of the 'Granny Shoe', classic hertiage brands such as Bally, Russell & Bromley, Barker and Van Dal come to mind. We suggest you look for details in the shoe like a hand crafted leather sole and leather lining, leather  front tassles and a gold horse bit cross bar to be sure of pure quality.

The Italians know a thing or two about  the classic  Granny shoes! Berty suggests you look out for Gucci Loafers and a Margaret Thatcher favourite 'Ferragamo' for the full ' Italian Granny Effect'! Gerty believes that these shoes work well with practically anything: skinny jeans, denim hot pants, legging, however, it is the trusted tweed trouser that works the best on any classic vintage gal. We think Margaret Rutherford's portrayal of Agatha Christies Miss Marple in the 1950's is the epitomy of marrying fine Harris Tweed with a classic  Granny Shoes a fabulous example of classic dressing.

It's not just Berty & Gerty Vintage that advocate this look many designers such as Ralph Lauren and Burberry Prorsum have embraced this season trend for Countryside Chic. This look revists old country classic: tweed jackets, Fair Isle jumpers, arran jumpers, leather gloves, silk scarves and of course the 'Granny Shoe'.

The power of purple or should we call it Papal fashion is everywhere this autumn. Normally, bright scarlet red is a big favoutite on the catwalks for autumn, but not this year! We have seen deep purple shades from the likes of Erdem and Dior, whereas Chloe and DKNY have plummed for dark black cherry. This whole experience has made Berty & Gerty Vintage feel a little fruity, are you feeing fruity? For this season we will be adding a touch of vintage rock and roll along the lines of: 'Deep Purple', 'King Crimson', 'Under the Cherry Moon'... AS THE QUEEN'S DIAMOND JUBILEE FAST APPROACES THE FASHIONABLE ARE GOING CRAZY FOR ANYTHING QUINTESSENTIALLY ENGLISH, THIS COULD INCLUDE: DIAMONDS, CORGIS, TEACUPS AND OF COURSE THE UNION JACK.  MANY ROYALISTS AND NON-ROYALISTS ALIKE  WILL BE GOING TO DIAMOND JUBLIEE STREET PARTIES  IN LONDON OR IN THEIR LOCAL TOWN. The Berty & Gerty Guide to Looking Cool at the Camden Crawl 2012

Berty says: The golden rule for looking cool during the Camden Crawl is, in a nutshell, wear a hat! 

Throughout music history the hat has been a key accessory: think Marc Bolan wearing  his Top Hat on the cover of the 'Slider' or  David Bowie, Circa 1976,  in character as the Thin White Duke wearing his Fedora.  Rock and Rollers have always finished off a look with a fine hat, be it a Pork Pie  as  the star accessory atop a two tone tonic suit  or  in more recent years Pete Doherty wearing his staple trilby working his skinny jean rock aesthetic.

Berty & Gerty have welcomed a few famous  rockers in over the years looking for the ultimate  cool hat. Most memorably Meatloaf  purchased one of our black cowboy hats to wear at the Kerrang Awards.  Debbie Harry from Blondie also popped in to B&G in search of one of our Pork Pie hats on route to her performance at Latitude. 

         Top Tips for styling the rocker hat look: 

• Tilt it on the back of your head for extra loucheness.
• Add a peacock feather to the side of your fedora.
• Girls wear a man's trilby or bowler for a sexy look.
•  Work a massive floppy 70's hat with long hair.

Vintage Guide to 90's Style

90's fashion is making a big come back on the streets of Camden, North London. Those of us who lived through the 90's  as a teenager the first time around  might hesitate at the thought of unkempt grunge for a second time. Indeed, the 1990's was a period that rejected fashion leading to a casual look, including T-shirts, Jeans, Trainers and Dr. Martens. Here at Berty & Gerty Vintage in Camden Lock, we have our fingers firmly on the trend pulse, giving the youth of 2012 a big helping hand to achieving the perfect 90's look. Here is  our 5 point vintage guide to 90's style:

1. Grunge the early 1990's look: includes oversized t-shirts, oversized jumpers, leggings,  head scarves, denim shorts, Dr Martens and babydoll dresses.
